Charlotte hotel developer opens latest property; Update on MLS name reveal; Wells Fargo taps new head of home lending

Despite an ongoing pandemic that’s badly battered the hospitality industry, a mixed-use development in Mooresville will see about 250 hotel rooms added in the coming months with the opening of two new properties.

Charlotte-based Maya Hotels opened the first of those two hotels — the 120-room Tru by Hilton — on Wednesday in the LangTree Lake Norman development. Maya Hotels also manages Tru by Hilton. Its adjacent Aloft hotel project will add another 128 rooms in Mooresville and is expected to open in September, Krishna Deva, vice president of Maya Hotels, told CBJ in an email.

The hotels are located on Alcove Road within the LangTree development off Interstate 77’s Exit 31. The two six-story hotels have a project value of $40 million, with work on both properties starting in the summer of 2018, as CBJ previously reported.

“Though the pandemic has affected travel in the near term, we feel strongly that there is a need for this type of hotel in this location, and are optimistic about the hotel’s future,” Deva told CBJ on Thursday. “This hotel provides a very unique concept to the growing LangTree Lake Norman mixed use development.”

The local hotel developer has three additional projects in the design phase that’ll be added to its portfolio — an Atwell Suites near Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Hilton Garden Inn also near the airport and Holiday Inn Express in Huntersville near I-77’s Exit 23. The anticipated completion dates for those properties haven’t been determined yet, Deva said.

“Certainly the pandemic has created more challenges and roadblocks to the timelines we had originally contemplated for these projects,” she said.

The Tru by Hilton brand entered the Charlotte market shortly after being launched by Hilton Worldwide in 2016. Its initial plans called for a 98-room hotel at the Ayrsley master-planned development in southwest Charlotte. Other locations for the franchise-only brand have since been added in Rock Hill, Fort Mill and near the Charlotte airport, at West Tyvola Road and Cascade Pointe Boulevard. That latter property appears to be opening in September, the Tru by Hilton website shows.

Aloft, a flag by Marriott International Inc., has three other locations in the Charlotte market: at the EpiCentre in uptown, in Ballantyne and near the airport — its newest to open.
