Census Confirms Explosive Lake Norman-Area Growth

Among Lake Norman-area communities, southern Iredell County has experienced the most-significant population growth over the past decade, according to just-released (and delayed) data from the 2020 U.S. Census.

Mooresville’s population surged more than 53 percent and has surpassed 50,000, while Troutman grew by 55 percent, to 3,698.

Huntersville, which grew by 31 percent for the decade, remains the largest lake-area community, with a population of 61,376. The town has grown by 146 percent over the past 20 years, and nearly 2,000 percent since 1990, when just 3,104 residents called Huntersville home.

With large swaths of undeveloped land within its jurisdiction, Huntersville has the potential for continued exponential growth.

Cornelius and Davidson also experienced significant growth. Davidson’s population grew by 38 percent, to 15,106, while Cornelius now has 31,412 residents, a 26.3 percent increase.

Combined, the three northern Mecklenburg towns are now home to nearly 108,000 residents.

On the west side of the lake, the Denver census designated place grew by 16.8 percent, to 2,697. The Westport CDP is measured separately and boasts 5,705 residents.
